<br />
Sometimes it's hard to remember there is still learning to be done and work to accomplish.<br />
<br />
But can't that work be holiday themed? It can in my book!<br />
<br />
A new Christmas math activity is available in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Calculate-2-3-Digit-Multiplication-Christmas-Activities-1590940" target="_blank">store</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4OEIdm7-4a81RBPrpmqRtancWU6M3WD2WIWU0RKHuTMxjFiwMrNyFrea1iLNrtVyCDWISDzh3J4y9174dwXbY-uR4ferU2ObQeq0KHAkTgdg3UV9bFEpP5mgjGfUjfvaEvcFKhhtP5qrV/s1600/15791968009_c53bc6e109_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4OEIdm7-4a81RBPrpmqRtancWU6M3WD2WIWU0RKHuTMxjFiwMrNyFrea1iLNrtVyCDWISDzh3J4y9174dwXbY-uR4ferU2ObQeq0KHAkTgdg3UV9bFEpP5mgjGfUjfvaEvcFKhhtP5qrV/s1600/15791968009_c53bc6e109_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It can be used to supplement a 2 and 3 digit multiplication lesson or makes a great homework assignment.<br />
<br />
There are two activities...<br />
<br />
A Christmas tree (15 two-digit problems)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEnYwXcKk2NJfGVSNkGqflpca6Da_NOsFTZjiKiqR72vb2c1T4QRlx3y8HGH_5hcKn_7l_nq3Qy08nLlhi9VIYv62-ENBCM1XdgsqAjgWfqgYW4hKCMQwOslCvtt0J9QnMT4fLLgYxmcfi/s1600/15977937695_60a2d3b6d1_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEnYwXcKk2NJfGVSNkGqflpca6Da_NOsFTZjiKiqR72vb2c1T4QRlx3y8HGH_5hcKn_7l_nq3Qy08nLlhi9VIYv62-ENBCM1XdgsqAjgWfqgYW4hKCMQwOslCvtt0J9QnMT4fLLgYxmcfi/s1600/15977937695_60a2d3b6d1_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
and Santa and a reindeer (15 two and three-digit problems).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibw8bI4vp3A5T5VhZEyd_CYFPCA4KL03smYRtFBQRAq_jF-qsRVIZJwxwupnksut9ZXajVfVmc-Em89cQbuKur4xmKi6wF3biZheGZ1XXo_Ncry9yMHCk6iNrJxlrM7B4Jxnlgmk7av7oq/s1600/15790664690_33b84d313a_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibw8bI4vp3A5T5VhZEyd_CYFPCA4KL03smYRtFBQRAq_jF-qsRVIZJwxwupnksut9ZXajVfVmc-Em89cQbuKur4xmKi6wF3biZheGZ1XXo_Ncry9yMHCk6iNrJxlrM7B4Jxnlgmk7av7oq/s1600/15790664690_33b84d313a_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Both include 15 problems and a small coloring activity that helps you quickly check for accuracy. The coloring portion is small because time is limited. It adds just a touch of fun to this multiplication worksheet.<br />
<br />
If you think your students would enjoy this activity, you can find it <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Calculate-2-3-Digit-Multiplication-Christmas-Activities-1590940" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm about to talk about simple machines. Not quite the stuff inspiration is made of.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But they do help us out in life. So there's that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgve6ZdfzEZA4d9NMq03yHkxWkwDLPz7ouosP8eVZ74LnNUAH6Rjuy08FFpfFSQUvAfVtGjsXMo_ZrJVEn0djb6I6JrhN1XVtyhAypzxc3q88i0kM_tp-j12AE0v8BfnkQ4GzZfsXXFjJ46/s1600/Lets+Illustrate+Simple+Machines+thumbnails.001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgve6ZdfzEZA4d9NMq03yHkxWkwDLPz7ouosP8eVZ74LnNUAH6Rjuy08FFpfFSQUvAfVtGjsXMo_ZrJVEn0djb6I6JrhN1XVtyhAypzxc3q88i0kM_tp-j12AE0v8BfnkQ4GzZfsXXFjJ46/s1600/Lets+Illustrate+Simple+Machines+thumbnails.001.jpg" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I was teaching middle school, simple machines were a part of my year. I always attempted to show my students how useful they were, by finding them in everyday life.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm a huge proponent of showing students that what they learn in class is applicable outside the classroom walls.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And simple machines are everywhere. This product includes 48 common ones.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgken2t2sm6XN6gkBGKL2XXzKpLA8HFVCIG495nqYpyHZFLl_aekQBV3iK4721PCwTfzH3hmWL0MHlYGdcWH-pdazdGg117Hd1cK03VHYXEJggv3CK0krlyqsSpz72Di9F4qvu1bCp98HpH/s1600/14386679318_c2a0cae57e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgken2t2sm6XN6gkBGKL2XXzKpLA8HFVCIG495nqYpyHZFLl_aekQBV3iK4721PCwTfzH3hmWL0MHlYGdcWH-pdazdGg117Hd1cK03VHYXEJggv3CK0krlyqsSpz72Di9F4qvu1bCp98HpH/s1600/14386679318_c2a0cae57e.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Students create a scene using the cut-and-paste simple machines available to them. They then fill in the rest of the picture, color it neatly and write about it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You'll be surprised at the creativity in your room.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

No matter what you're teaching, you can dig up some information or statistics for the kids.<br />
<br />
I was a stickler for representing it in graph form.<br />
<br />
Basically, I love graphs.<br />
<br />
But not all graphs are created equal. I like graphing real data, data that means something. Data that shows our students that their education ties into life outside the classroom window.<br />
<br />
That kind of data.<br />
<br />
Data that tells us where maple syrup comes from....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH82uBPzvaxcdXkrEwMbTaP0_0B-5Vh-5WRvLFHGx9Z5IY1BZDsH1AEkOc_yDVcRNDGSXSFj9J3Xcr-SUpbydkmRI_R4gx_YxBmI8AELaxC7jrtqIHUhrO8aKapCUzDs1joDmivDlA3mCx/s1600/Circle+Graph+Bundle+Thumbnails.003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH82uBPzvaxcdXkrEwMbTaP0_0B-5Vh-5WRvLFHGx9Z5IY1BZDsH1AEkOc_yDVcRNDGSXSFj9J3Xcr-SUpbydkmRI_R4gx_YxBmI8AELaxC7jrtqIHUhrO8aKapCUzDs1joDmivDlA3mCx/s1600/Circle+Graph+Bundle+Thumbnails.003.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Or which countries excelled at the Winter Olympics...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFGNPRHJXrNGdHBXbsaBeUTeQa2SNalBsNd0Zm9CP07uuLvAjhKBB6w7X3CRZcHu2scN6AFVHD1Ns5EPynP7m0Jn6JOgu04aCq2fHp3Mxjhq-HLbG2B1QiNHpmz3nQ_b_CuKAKDHv7ykY-/s1600/Bar+Graph+Bundle+Thumbnails.004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFGNPRHJXrNGdHBXbsaBeUTeQa2SNalBsNd0Zm9CP07uuLvAjhKBB6w7X3CRZcHu2scN6AFVHD1Ns5EPynP7m0Jn6JOgu04aCq2fHp3Mxjhq-HLbG2B1QiNHpmz3nQ_b_CuKAKDHv7ykY-/s1600/Bar+Graph+Bundle+Thumbnails.004.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Or how hot is Houston?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf640o2ZcAquP6FpFBm4LbfKyw4N7nE8vmtTV_vR8vBh93cJtBVZowRSRHOtJlxLsRzxyd1Ep8luE2FH6b5zRnmNRUKcny8z5IatyCECL8gZG4NrVc6_jSGcOGngEPG0eL6WmFO-mCGNTY/s1600/Line+Graph+Bundle+Thumbnails.002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf640o2ZcAquP6FpFBm4LbfKyw4N7nE8vmtTV_vR8vBh93cJtBVZowRSRHOtJlxLsRzxyd1Ep8luE2FH6b5zRnmNRUKcny8z5IatyCECL8gZG4NrVc6_jSGcOGngEPG0eL6WmFO-mCGNTY/s1600/Line+Graph+Bundle+Thumbnails.002.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm pretty much head over heels for graphs.<br />
<br />

<br />
I love them.<br />
<br />
I think they help students visual the story of history.<br />
<br />
I know they help me.<br />
<br />
Our most recent story: The American Revolution<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjndiik6pRSc2sgFm6mgJdGqEn0IXbnoovCQAmhUbzMGPHYS8U_nxJbKbhaZGwJK3zw8dxz9r3vFpO2X3kh5tIMFd0wLHtvAvnQH0havXMiAfsGFCSFTDydP3YFzk-D21HI5tFWr0qH4UPc/s1600/12351255403_a1c073f48f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjndiik6pRSc2sgFm6mgJdGqEn0IXbnoovCQAmhUbzMGPHYS8U_nxJbKbhaZGwJK3zw8dxz9r3vFpO2X3kh5tIMFd0wLHtvAvnQH0havXMiAfsGFCSFTDydP3YFzk-D21HI5tFWr0qH4UPc/s1600/12351255403_a1c073f48f.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It takes us from the French and Indian War to the Treaty of Paris. It's an exciting story filled with heroes and battles.<br />
<br />
And now it's on our wall.<br />
<br />
I used twine strung between small finishing nails and mini clothes pin to make our timeline.<br />
<br />
Each card has the name of an integral person or event from the Revolutionary War.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgggSxR4ebAQdmV_BM5j4Lu018jq7uDeGOGBvpffZvHjrTbFBGSlH15SwhJBLHvINcdRlWmeGxe8WcpdhxXJe3oQk92XrjdpcRZgWqaCDM9hFK7g0PxIJpcu6WZJwQKpSSbjHzd1PThXg_1/s1600/12335798185_33a77b1b5c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgggSxR4ebAQdmV_BM5j4Lu018jq7uDeGOGBvpffZvHjrTbFBGSlH15SwhJBLHvINcdRlWmeGxe8WcpdhxXJe3oQk92XrjdpcRZgWqaCDM9hFK7g0PxIJpcu6WZJwQKpSSbjHzd1PThXg_1/s1600/12335798185_33a77b1b5c.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
There's room on the back for students to write how the person/event impacted the war. We also shaded the Colonial people and victories blue and the British ones red.<br />
<br />
There are 48 cards in the set. They can be used individually as trading cards or put together in a flip book like this...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAfsRlAr0muSE0E8wircKL6Ck4BpH0qF8zVg0P89ZrrVkJLmlysRptlaRN4d4HlXJ41HW3R148y0hcFUsDX8ZJNkO5oN_ixACq2xOIq19GSGhwactjWfRbeYgrH8-wLD3XmFcLi6WiCoY4/s1600/12350823254_f3e866bfc9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAfsRlAr0muSE0E8wircKL6Ck4BpH0qF8zVg0P89ZrrVkJLmlysRptlaRN4d4HlXJ41HW3R148y0hcFUsDX8ZJNkO5oN_ixACq2xOIq19GSGhwactjWfRbeYgrH8-wLD3XmFcLi6WiCoY4/s1600/12350823254_f3e866bfc9.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I punched a single hole in the bottom right hand corner and attached them with a brad. They could also be stapled.<br />
<br />
Each card comes in three sizes and the set includes blank cards so you can add any person or event not included.<br />
<br />

<br />
My students used to love microscope lab days.<br />
<br />
Who doesn't like seeing cool stuff like human skin cells, dog hair and pond scum magnified before their eyes? <br />
<br />
Before I let them loose with the expensive instruments, however, I make them learn the parts and what they do.<br />
<br />
That's where this came in handy...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJn6iXqPafqCKuzVs3tjT-JhEpoCy8k4UytjFjS_MjfnJXmbPx8pwVK9EJieru7HsapIDvMRMgx5k8CY7LEbx8Tz2zD4u0_5czJsUZqmP-ZbRBQk68Eg5Tf9VkWjseZJ3v1l6xrB8s4xap/s1600/11999403014_f2fd6c272f_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJn6iXqPafqCKuzVs3tjT-JhEpoCy8k4UytjFjS_MjfnJXmbPx8pwVK9EJieru7HsapIDvMRMgx5k8CY7LEbx8Tz2zD4u0_5czJsUZqmP-ZbRBQk68Eg5Tf9VkWjseZJ3v1l6xrB8s4xap/s1600/11999403014_f2fd6c272f_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I love color-coded mapping activities. I think the process of identifying the part and coloring it can help our more visual and kinesthetic learners retain the information.<br />
<br />
I also have another version.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGD2SihCSmhpI019P3JOrIdu8a7XtJ7cqfoE0JeJ4PkuaP86r4zveP9c_J87b4xxX3W4nG41KHDD3oZBT8SGeYIOhOg0jP_pSo-Ius9HQy35AuTtPr8mcAJiaBcr0bqxZ8Yqe-tAMlZ52U/s1600/11343060574_c679df85b0_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGD2SihCSmhpI019P3JOrIdu8a7XtJ7cqfoE0JeJ4PkuaP86r4zveP9c_J87b4xxX3W4nG41KHDD3oZBT8SGeYIOhOg0jP_pSo-Ius9HQy35AuTtPr8mcAJiaBcr0bqxZ8Yqe-tAMlZ52U/s1600/11343060574_c679df85b0_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This allows students to label and color the microscope themselves. It also allows for differences in vocabulary. For example, you may use the term objective lens instead of objective in your classroom. I always have them circle the label with the color of the part. Sometimes I have them list the function alongside the label.<br />
<br />
If this activity would be a help in your classroom, you can find it <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Map-A-Microscope-1059285" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I also have other mapping activities available <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/A-House-Called-Home/Category/Let-s-Map" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<br />
When I was teaching, I was always on the hunt for ways to draw every kid into a project.<br />
<br />
I'm hoping <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Illustrate-Charlottes-Web-949390">this free resource</a> can help.<br />
<br />
<br />
If you're reading Charlotte's Web this year, here's something you might want to try.<br />
<br />
I always liked to give my students a chance to be a little creative. Some of them loved it. Others, not so much. But this resource can cater to those on both sides of the fence.<br />
<br />
Each student gets three pages of cut and paste pictures from the book. <br />
<br />
Page one contains the human characters and some bigger props...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj53Cv2uEyUwtXsfeQUhEoUQ0CWHiNkkZV2XVeLIOwwSrHWl3ZX-e9OfRQuKPgqRcXYYeLPpth7r6V7M6SkfbIZN3loIQEm_GM_6Vwq1XdI-E_30WW3_c9Yr5suBytV686x9YGYxwjL70BF/s1600/10566885895_a9354a3af1_z.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj53Cv2uEyUwtXsfeQUhEoUQ0CWHiNkkZV2XVeLIOwwSrHWl3ZX-e9OfRQuKPgqRcXYYeLPpth7r6V7M6SkfbIZN3loIQEm_GM_6Vwq1XdI-E_30WW3_c9Yr5suBytV686x9YGYxwjL70BF/s1600/10566885895_a9354a3af1_z.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Page 2 has the animal characters...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeSPKsnK-DPgK5CA4nqLDrfTiZtNuTWsSdkZX3A6HAZeGz0iB-_Y8Xyyrb2G_byQ9OSvJptg_xAHg8UwGxRAbFKngfwUiuuiJmh32N6KnexGonak-jHkpbQDER-mzsbzgNIJvnLiUR968Z/s1600/10567041444_e40bba81bf_z.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeSPKsnK-DPgK5CA4nqLDrfTiZtNuTWsSdkZX3A6HAZeGz0iB-_Y8Xyyrb2G_byQ9OSvJptg_xAHg8UwGxRAbFKngfwUiuuiJmh32N6KnexGonak-jHkpbQDER-mzsbzgNIJvnLiUR968Z/s1600/10567041444_e40bba81bf_z.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Page 3 gives them props from each chapter...<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFrf7uQLHS9OWSpj2Wq8jQ2kc8nr0uBRPOkCT2Ar9u7wsqQQBr4wvIxzRoYKQmLIQIqwVn4BA2w5BXu_NyhBLsS5Cp6LOQ0HToQ3VVSmovUikpJ-aELIUjPUK82wQCyQDARirzKsflA4YB/s1600/10567020765_a0a9e7924c_z.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFrf7uQLHS9OWSpj2Wq8jQ2kc8nr0uBRPOkCT2Ar9u7wsqQQBr4wvIxzRoYKQmLIQIqwVn4BA2w5BXu_NyhBLsS5Cp6LOQ0HToQ3VVSmovUikpJ-aELIUjPUK82wQCyQDARirzKsflA4YB/s1600/10567020765_a0a9e7924c_z.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
They choose their pictures, arrange them on the page and then draw and color the rest of the scene.<br />
<br />
With these small pictures they can create a scene from any chapter. You could let them pick the chapter they liked best or have them draw a chapter out of a hat. You could do this independently or as a cooperative project, having them work in twos or threes to create one picture, or even a series of pictures depicting the entire chapter.<br />
<br />
Included are two types of pages for them to create on. <br />
<br />
One uses the entire page and includes a second page of lines for them to describe or summarize their scene.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcn6VBBX3jLog3lkS7Fc4sE8xkHUWQTg-RtY944DI_f7aA3wIq0IssaKeIDWcK_xJ7kG8iHFIGPWIxs0CjyBqTw6FDvc3wH_UWga4LlPM7hPRzQjCP3ZRb0dYo44IkZclEGQN_lIUx7Uq3/s1600/10546623704_77d4ec4f05.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcn6VBBX3jLog3lkS7Fc4sE8xkHUWQTg-RtY944DI_f7aA3wIq0IssaKeIDWcK_xJ7kG8iHFIGPWIxs0CjyBqTw6FDvc3wH_UWga4LlPM7hPRzQjCP3ZRb0dYo44IkZclEGQN_lIUx7Uq3/s1600/10546623704_77d4ec4f05.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The second uses a half page for the scene and the other half for the description.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ1u9XqWPA6Sn0mtuhit-vHwnBsmLF4JBw1CfRGhtzXjRmhn44joJcgsOT5Q7dJGepw83oLmox_U0AqAahrz88CmrIeqWqWmxY5cTf28wRPe0fc31aw2XoEVO4DQUtEvu4J7-fyxGViXmS/s1600/10546622124_befd524e31_z.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ1u9XqWPA6Sn0mtuhit-vHwnBsmLF4JBw1CfRGhtzXjRmhn44joJcgsOT5Q7dJGepw83oLmox_U0AqAahrz88CmrIeqWqWmxY5cTf28wRPe0fc31aw2XoEVO4DQUtEvu4J7-fyxGViXmS/s1600/10546622124_befd524e31_z.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The small pictures are a help to those students who just don't know where to start and to those who aren't as project minded as others. <br />
<br />
If this resource would be a help to you, you can find it <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Illustrate-Charlottes-Web-949390">here</a>.Mamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17473863023080828807noreply@blogger.com37tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904675348204042427.post-42450694085292433872013-10-28T18:57:00.000-07:002014-08-03T20:38:58.603-07:00The 7 ContinentsI love maps. I do. I have a large one hanging in our school room at home.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsEcb1QFT8ACYOdhI8sHlS8Dg8pmz0R55nUfbh8nJQOhQwWLhauhzwzzprfnT2gvNWD-M0qtX9iMldlVO6mcyFnX9L1rf99JQbGv9rnKtfRMpg7RLKvyKoPBktCHz3CMSMQ4dFFygntx6Q/s1600/10444938414_f908cf4ee8.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsEcb1QFT8ACYOdhI8sHlS8Dg8pmz0R55nUfbh8nJQOhQwWLhauhzwzzprfnT2gvNWD-M0qtX9iMldlVO6mcyFnX9L1rf99JQbGv9rnKtfRMpg7RLKvyKoPBktCHz3CMSMQ4dFFygntx6Q/s1600/10444938414_f908cf4ee8.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
We reference it often as we learn about different places and people and customs. <br />
<br />
But when learning where things are, like the continents, I've found that having their own in front of them helps. <br />
<br />
Especially one they can color.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvg6LpfBVsNNP_HRTr649aPPLULE5pVUOwByDNXV-3xqy1NYIDGtjVljV7DNAiEsvh80NoA3okiOQ1ZSj7HvhfVYkddTTO5ufACG88Xu0LcBz0lVD8Lkg9JmJhlk1H-w_Ps3QPDcZvQTVN/s1600/10566587494_d0ca3080c8.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvg6LpfBVsNNP_HRTr649aPPLULE5pVUOwByDNXV-3xqy1NYIDGtjVljV7DNAiEsvh80NoA3okiOQ1ZSj7HvhfVYkddTTO5ufACG88Xu0LcBz0lVD8Lkg9JmJhlk1H-w_Ps3QPDcZvQTVN/s1600/10566587494_d0ca3080c8.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
That was the idea behind "<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Map-The-Continents-950803">Let's Map: The Continents</a>."<br />
<br />
It can help your students as they learn about the seven continents and the five oceans.<br />
<br />
It comes in three varieties. One includes labeling both the continents and oceans, one labels just the continents and one is labeled for them and only requires your students to color.<br />
<br />
If this would be a help in your classroom, it's available <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Map-The-Continents-950803">her</a><u>e</u>.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYC2rgzGBphoC1qa2SRkQoXSFODC3yKXlv3hlB6AA6Haifd0z9_gx85nYRUx1Bu38TyfJUn9ubbdJKJOHEIeLkPoUuIfjQUMNMGvuIWI3J5dyeHUu_rGgFeF29V1YaHuMQJVw-4UJrCCgt/s1600/9971417805_2d82a26f00_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYC2rgzGBphoC1qa2SRkQoXSFODC3yKXlv3hlB6AA6Haifd0z9_gx85nYRUx1Bu38TyfJUn9ubbdJKJOHEIeLkPoUuIfjQUMNMGvuIWI3J5dyeHUu_rGgFeF29V1YaHuMQJVw-4UJrCCgt/s1600/9971417805_2d82a26f00_z.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
They get to pick a planet. Actually, sometimes I make them draw a planet out of a hat. No matter how they end up with a particular planet, it's theirs to research.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
They find out many things about their planet, from its surface features to its temperature, from its size to its orbit. They collect their information and then the fun begins. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Their goal is to persuade others to visit their planet. They have to take the information they gathered and turn it into a tourism advertisement There is a poster to make and a paragraph to write. What is it that makes their planet so great? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE6kU6dE6Qi1v_bp7CoKQAGToG6nprH3-S_5XqV1o0R5lVu1xYkoMTqMcvGNqUA3frJ7MnxAig1FM4NdqDIM_4ULx47YzddL6thHNuGqjUWm_kevwKx7IRBDHk2W1zU9rknAwOyuOHzaLc/s1600/9971496935_4f19e47555_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE6kU6dE6Qi1v_bp7CoKQAGToG6nprH3-S_5XqV1o0R5lVu1xYkoMTqMcvGNqUA3frJ7MnxAig1FM4NdqDIM_4ULx47YzddL6thHNuGqjUWm_kevwKx7IRBDHk2W1zU9rknAwOyuOHzaLc/s1600/9971496935_4f19e47555_z.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Is it cold? Attract the winter sport loving type.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Is it mountainous? Appeal to the adventurous type.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Is it's gravity less than Earth? Tout your planet's weight-loss perks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Let your students be creative. Let their imaginations run wild!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2Jf8w6UovcNUlud4fMP1X4EC0PFKIWgou95YQazGweqcWSuc_i0Tc2fPqzivk-jZLANqKm88KE330iyqGXRZCrYUcwXqgUzZzAcgeGO4IKpmbF4fUNGVGJyjqcRNC7f1TYV6j2mKMD3Ec/s1600/9971544563_436c4de93e_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2Jf8w6UovcNUlud4fMP1X4EC0PFKIWgou95YQazGweqcWSuc_i0Tc2fPqzivk-jZLANqKm88KE330iyqGXRZCrYUcwXqgUzZzAcgeGO4IKpmbF4fUNGVGJyjqcRNC7f1TYV6j2mKMD3Ec/s1600/9971544563_436c4de93e_z.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Also included in the project is a timeline of space technology. How has the space program changed? Your students will learn about some of the inventions that have allowed us to explore further and further into space.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
But is it worth it? Are the risks worth the rewards? Your students will read about the benefits of space travel and the risks involved. They will then need to decide which side of the issue they are on and write a paragraph supporting their stance. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrq0s1GIfz-jMk9CdULM3jXwdGYyqYFm8PS8iBytKKnkDmIAbjNV2s3_MRH1b4uARRj8uPqc8xDt51MiIZOBAy61k2uSPXsMvgO30rFkC8AdYYnCOQ9lApU-xZf5qwFgKfN5HnGo1R5IKu/s1600/9971478486_82d9cc4385_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrq0s1GIfz-jMk9CdULM3jXwdGYyqYFm8PS8iBytKKnkDmIAbjNV2s3_MRH1b4uARRj8uPqc8xDt51MiIZOBAy61k2uSPXsMvgO30rFkC8AdYYnCOQ9lApU-xZf5qwFgKfN5HnGo1R5IKu/s1600/9971478486_82d9cc4385_z.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
A lively classroom debate will ensue as students speak for and against the risks of space exploration.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The project is organized into a single file folder. All parts have a place and the end product is an easy to store, easily transported project. I just love that about it!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Want to give this project a spin? You can find it <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Research-A-Solar-System-Project-900785" target="_blank">here</a> at my TpT store. It includes all the student pages, the timeline, debate reading, planet info sheet, grading rubric and answer key.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Enjoy your journey through space!</span>Mamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17473863023080828807noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904675348204042427.post-30441715231843481412013-09-17T17:51:00.001-07:002014-08-03T20:38:24.687-07:00Happy Birthday!<span style="font-family: inherit;">Kids love to talk about their birthday. They just do. Here at the start of a new school year, why not take a minute and recognize that special day for each of your kiddos. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Here's an activity that can not only do that, but teaches them about pictographs at the same time.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
All include a color set and a black & white set.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The color version is ready to print, laminate and cut. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The black & white version can be used to get the whole class involved by giving each student their own balloon to decorate. They can include their name and birthdate right on it. Once decorated, you can build the pictograph with your kids by calling out each month and having the students with birthdays in that month come up and put their balloon on the graph.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
It makes for a great classroom display that can stay up all year! </span><br />

The problem is, all the countries fly by us in the book and when the chapter is over we look at each other with very little information gleaned.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
In came a little graphic organizer I created for her. It helped us slow down a minute and focus on each country as they went by.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Here's Cuba:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtUhU_D0isYlIHJf4h-w5b5bWae3Zrcl2TZx_upzjUClIwQ08LP5u2ITksJWSbipFKXldkjJ5J8VtraBfS7DHewI7HeAyFZndvIIhVPyFSiGA_Jg__-IryRIZbf3sLJWUUUXZBvYJTjp3D/s1600/9655032559_2348c90af7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtUhU_D0isYlIHJf4h-w5b5bWae3Zrcl2TZx_upzjUClIwQ08LP5u2ITksJWSbipFKXldkjJ5J8VtraBfS7DHewI7HeAyFZndvIIhVPyFSiGA_Jg__-IryRIZbf3sLJWUUUXZBvYJTjp3D/s1600/9655032559_2348c90af7.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
At the end of her course she will have a nice collection of the countries she has studied throughout the year. It takes only a few minutes to fill out the information.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I also made two other versions. The second version (2 pages) mirrors the first, only allowing more space. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRsDqmnNGCL_KBlIbtk0sYRxvZ80X0_sQ_qOweynt13kcFMdiJIfRNdi5ZTG7p6OHo2thr7EufYquDtRPPK876VNMFOz7DnuFWu9Us2w7Uj-GliGlXtzrRZ6C4vpjew3TNfBVg1W8GX4oF/s1600/Country+B.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRsDqmnNGCL_KBlIbtk0sYRxvZ80X0_sQ_qOweynt13kcFMdiJIfRNdi5ZTG7p6OHo2thr7EufYquDtRPPK876VNMFOz7DnuFWu9Us2w7Uj-GliGlXtzrRZ6C4vpjew3TNfBVg1W8GX4oF/s1600/Country+B.png" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The third version (4 pages) allows the student to write the information in paragraph form.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwrApUK2FG6ofMq20pLdTMn3mJjaI5_zHSNj9vXjkAt9o_fZshh8erBpYZoPoMvRnlwm2v-7s-tp2UXmNydDugqqH_NamdZLKhpOV4PB0MZ1O1y8VI2KmOMjhuGpcdomqHkJ-9OL-3mujF/s1600/Country+C.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwrApUK2FG6ofMq20pLdTMn3mJjaI5_zHSNj9vXjkAt9o_fZshh8erBpYZoPoMvRnlwm2v-7s-tp2UXmNydDugqqH_NamdZLKhpOV4PB0MZ1O1y8VI2KmOMjhuGpcdomqHkJ-9OL-3mujF/s1600/Country+C.png" /></span></a></div>

I do. I just love it. That's what happened with this set of monsters I found by <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/PinkPueblo" target="_blank">Pink Pueblo</a> on Etsy.com. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
So I set out to use these guys in a product. I ended up with a couple featuring these little monsters. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
First out of the box was <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Learn-Science-Safety-Rules-and-Bumper-Sticker-Activity-619334" target="_blank">"Let's Learn: Science Safety Rules and Bumper Sticker Activity."</a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I did this activity every year with my middle schoolers. They enjoyed the chance to be creative and it was a good way to reinforce those safety rules that are so important in the science classroom or laboratory.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
There are five general safety rules that can apply to any science setting. This is where the cool monsters come in...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSFLR5c_EXltObfmgtOPk1PZ949R747P0CZ2VL4Ezd3RvP2K3XrdZg-6xT8vt5sxdnKMAJCPrY7yOCIqHZW1DrQ7xXREwwoq6NPGJnePazr8p5njzIoBN9Rl-t3oEWAlymJjq0h_QNrPgn/s1600/Monster+Science+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSFLR5c_EXltObfmgtOPk1PZ949R747P0CZ2VL4Ezd3RvP2K3XrdZg-6xT8vt5sxdnKMAJCPrY7yOCIqHZW1DrQ7xXREwwoq6NPGJnePazr8p5njzIoBN9Rl-t3oEWAlymJjq0h_QNrPgn/s1600/Monster+Science+2.png" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
But the real beauty of this product is in the bumper sticker activity. This is where your student's creative side gets to shine!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-jnOWGsuGi_33hS_I0DDT4EgM8m9ojz_m0WSGbfO42e9zNQtD9qIzz3Kg4LZp6pXQTwFfdrpdzk8LVJrU1IcnjxOC2lMds-MRpP6Rv-I2nww6IsjmzKPfZEXzFZvWXsEb0Od_dTarmJbI/s1600/Honk+Safety.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6RvDtO57CvrNqcWreHAqnegJF46caVvO4_I9mlfULWBY98kTilZ7rYNh76f72kVxRu9GtHFwRLxgHqLEOeAuYb4ZeNm5cD7k6RXGZoheQSmfvx80KdEON3QvBK50Z7AsP_P_-FXHg9RQ/s1600/Honk+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS6RvDtO57CvrNqcWreHAqnegJF46caVvO4_I9mlfULWBY98kTilZ7rYNh76f72kVxRu9GtHFwRLxgHqLEOeAuYb4ZeNm5cD7k6RXGZoheQSmfvx80KdEON3QvBK50Z7AsP_P_-FXHg9RQ/s1600/Honk+2.png" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here is where they choose a safety rule and illustrate it on a bumper sticker. Throughout the years I have gotten several that were just amazing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
My personal favorite had a picture of a clown and said, "Don't Clown Around, Keep Both Feet on the Ground!" Very creative and bonus points for rhyming!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Another fun way to finish off the activity is with a bumper sticker contest. I number each bumper sticker and tape it to my back wall. The students then get to vote on their favorite, ballot style, and the winner gets candy or a homework pass. I taught five classes of middle school science. Each class would choose a winner and those five winners would then be voted on by all classes for a grand champion. The students loved it!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
A couple of things that were helpful to me. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">*I printed the bumper sticker page on cardstock. It was more likely to withstand the folder and backpack it would make it into everyday.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">*I had them sketch out a rough draft onto scratch paper before working on the final copy.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">*This is the first contest of the year. It was always such a hit we had several more (water conservation poster, solar system map, scientist portrait, etc.).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
If you think this activity would be a good fit for your classroom, you can find it <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Learn-Science-Safety-Rules-and-Bumper-Sticker-Activity-619334" target="_blank">here</a>.</span><br />

You've Almost Made It!<span style="font-family: inherit;">It's that time of year! The end of the school year. Students are preparing to move to the next grade. Teachers are packing up their rooms. Some will change grades or districts, some will put the stuff right back up where it always goes in August. Either way, this part of the year is a wonderfully exciting time.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Can you tell I just LOVE summer?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I teach middle school science. At the end of each school year (which is next week for us) we have an end-of-the-year awards assembly. At that assembly I get to present three awards to three of my students. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Our three categories are...</span><br />

<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I whipped up some awards for my science team the other day and then posted them at my store as a freebie for anyone who could find them useful. I added a fourth science award that didn't have a specific category, just a general science award.</span></div>

It's getting close to the end of the year. The kids are antsy and the teachers are tired. It's that time of year. It's time for an independent project!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I love projects that not only follow the objectives, but allow the students some freedom and creativity. Our last unit is all about ecosystems and organisms, so in an effort to hold their attention for just a little while longer, I came up with a project they have really been enjoying.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRTT-2UkHCRW2s___YN9q9BJO8njAEHuZDvT1JD9UlXSSj3CW7XtVi7I6Rs_z2UjAPiL0v_bwfGBuY68Br7vAVYLPrPl7qLEy6tsWG4bHLi39A56rD7ZtS_aIacvQmH4ziFYmPJ6Hnnl3E/s1600/IMG_0721.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRTT-2UkHCRW2s___YN9q9BJO8njAEHuZDvT1JD9UlXSSj3CW7XtVi7I6Rs_z2UjAPiL0v_bwfGBuY68Br7vAVYLPrPl7qLEy6tsWG4bHLi39A56rD7ZtS_aIacvQmH4ziFYmPJ6Hnnl3E/s1600/IMG_0721.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
This project has a lot of flexibility. It can be completed entirely by the student if able to research in a library or on the Internet or it can be done piece by piece under the direction and guidance of the teacher (and a lot of other ways in between!). I allow my students to use the computers available in my classroom as well as their own Internet compatible devices in order to do their research.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The students start by working through twelve vocabulary terms. They write the definitions and illustrate the terms.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoy9nT-sEsVOx1IGrt7Ey1ED6koN7IChi3qoW9_OF2-64_OqFCy5V3bVK10oKfdmkZh4dd633XWZ2SBBiyLRNEv1KPDtrrxHO4sNQ-IMCx6VuQBQNGKHhJyRE6mGYp2rh8xZz_L3Bs9gnU/s1600/photo+(7)-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoy9nT-sEsVOx1IGrt7Ey1ED6koN7IChi3qoW9_OF2-64_OqFCy5V3bVK10oKfdmkZh4dd633XWZ2SBBiyLRNEv1KPDtrrxHO4sNQ-IMCx6VuQBQNGKHhJyRE6mGYp2rh8xZz_L3Bs9gnU/s1600/photo+(7)-001.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Then, the fun part. They choose an organism (producer or consumer) to research. A list of possible organisms is included for those who lament, "I just can't think of anything!"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The project walks them through the structure of an ecosystem from organisms to populations to communities. And has them list the biotic and abiotic factors from the ecosystem their organism is found.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgyXkxlG6ftMZ200WzeBxUKPDmv7YSL4x-CozAqQ4xqUdSodSZ19Eodh5IJX2BgyVO6IuBWfBE6wTN9IzKWoRk3Go7DHn1W_X60aaiVPqzDSn77Y_LCXLqvb3K0FT2-CaA_piSNxc5pm21/s1600/photo+(4)-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgyXkxlG6ftMZ200WzeBxUKPDmv7YSL4x-CozAqQ4xqUdSodSZ19Eodh5IJX2BgyVO6IuBWfBE6wTN9IzKWoRk3Go7DHn1W_X60aaiVPqzDSn77Y_LCXLqvb3K0FT2-CaA_piSNxc5pm21/s1600/photo+(4)-001.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Energy flow in an ecosystem is also researched. Students have to determine the differences between producers and consumers, as well as herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Student directions are plainly written and easy to follow. The final step has the student mount the completed project to a file folder for a neat and finished look! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
This is a great assignment for bulletin board displays or student presentations!</span><br />

The other day it was a periodic table game. I figure it's not going to hurt anybody to get a little further along in the science world. For years I have been playing a periodic table game with my students. They enjoy it so I thought it would be a good addition to my TeacherspayTeachers store. Funny how taking a classroom idea and making it ready to sell is not the easy, quick process I originally thought it was.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge788AaMYYiElc30O6cwzBQjeU0UidctELna-VWfzpZGEOfsy_5XC2fDIKwx1Vhrt49oqOGupW3w1v0wHj-BIC1Os2KKJmUVYB1StKi3QZLxwideZiTumaq5NR4L05vki9cZIqqZq5-sbp/s1600/8590287233_00b5d9311b_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge788AaMYYiElc30O6cwzBQjeU0UidctELna-VWfzpZGEOfsy_5XC2fDIKwx1Vhrt49oqOGupW3w1v0wHj-BIC1Os2KKJmUVYB1StKi3QZLxwideZiTumaq5NR4L05vki9cZIqqZq5-sbp/s320/8590287233_00b5d9311b_c.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
First off, I had always used a periodic table I had downloaded from the Internet. That made my first order of business making my own periodic table. It was fairly simple, but very time consuming. I then made a color-coded copy as well as a black and white copy. I like to have my students color-code their own in class. We color the metals green as we talk about the properties of metals. We put red dots on each element that is solid. We label the periods and groups and talk about the difference between atomic numbers and atomic masses. It's fascinating stuff, just ask the kids.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZvqIZPeyhPKr0ixe4qiX-JZCTxfqVt4gN90UxLnM2-cUdrZxKi98-Ls2XnzhzzOelfi5-wZbBdYyEK8sZ-gxm6iQ-yk3znDnk1jXDoItfK0lo7dGsXFpn9yyMIJlgdx5JeAihDr7VeHzJ/s1600/8590289497_e4958846ff_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZvqIZPeyhPKr0ixe4qiX-JZCTxfqVt4gN90UxLnM2-cUdrZxKi98-Ls2XnzhzzOelfi5-wZbBdYyEK8sZ-gxm6iQ-yk3znDnk1jXDoItfK0lo7dGsXFpn9yyMIJlgdx5JeAihDr7VeHzJ/s320/8590289497_e4958846ff_c.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
So the girls completed a color-coded periodic table following the directions. This helps to make sure my directions are complete and I haven't mixed up any of the information. Next we printed out the cards and the girls played the game. They had to work their way through all the questions (another way to check my accuracy). They were really good about finding mistakes and typos. I was able to fix them and finish up the file. Just another day in the life of being a teacher's kid.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The game can be played with 2-4 students per group. A card is drawn and the question is read. The student then gets 30 seconds to find the answer on the periodic table. The questions ask about element symbols, atomic numbers, periods, states of matter of elements, and more. The game could also be played pitting one student against another as they race to find the answer first. The game is available <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Periodic-Table-Activity-and-Game" target="_blank">here</a> at my TpT store.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
As the girls get older they end up with lots of odd teacher jobs. They are good sports about it. Whether they are stapling folders, grading papers or cutting out question cards, they work with a smile. I'm so thankful. I'm not saying they do it strictly for the Sonic milkshakes, but they do help! </span><br />

Both at home and in my classroom. I am not the teacher with a messy desk. I can't get anything done if there are things to be put away. I'm just not made that way. Something that helps me stay organized at school are those cheap, white dish bins you can buy at most dollar stores and at Walmart or Target.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuAHsJSzomlCsJ0SBrnEK3f9xykygKDu4NKwDU88bOW_9EqGTtM0m2AWHPlBw8E-e9kOdal-uyat881QE4lWlDRKtCZGUwH5mDFUhuLSA7UUeezwodO4iD2psGImSvxDZMHEbn5kJcV4zH/s1600/8570944080_91db305a7d_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuAHsJSzomlCsJ0SBrnEK3f9xykygKDu4NKwDU88bOW_9EqGTtM0m2AWHPlBw8E-e9kOdal-uyat881QE4lWlDRKtCZGUwH5mDFUhuLSA7UUeezwodO4iD2psGImSvxDZMHEbn5kJcV4zH/s1600/8570944080_91db305a7d_c.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I have these great cabinets in my room that line the back wall. On one set of shelves I put six bins - one for each of my six class periods. In these I collect papers to grade or pass back. Sometimes the students throw them in themselves. Other times I collect them and put them all in together. Either way it is an excellent way to keep each class set separated and all in one place.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxeFR7DMiJ5WXb9t_Q8Wzf08Got3Tyso6bPSxhyphenhyphenR67eiZ7S9P6VYjwcRcPz_iaaGDZQxCitL3r9P7uWt0Cy-u315IrlroHKQh53SdqpyD50VxzaAiMtFyMWZRCBKE9tIWd6ga4z3Ymz61B/s1600/8569835421_515caedf34_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxeFR7DMiJ5WXb9t_Q8Wzf08Got3Tyso6bPSxhyphenhyphenR67eiZ7S9P6VYjwcRcPz_iaaGDZQxCitL3r9P7uWt0Cy-u315IrlroHKQh53SdqpyD50VxzaAiMtFyMWZRCBKE9tIWd6ga4z3Ymz61B/s1600/8569835421_515caedf34_c.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
On another set of shelves I keep my eight unit bins. I teach science and for each unit I have supplies, videos and activities I use year after year. Instead of having to hunt for these each year, I store them in bins according to the unit. It also helps me to remember the activities that were a success and prevents me from having to redo the grunt work (laminating, cutting, labeling, etc.) because everything is in a nice, neat and organized container.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6nTBifbxf7UGi6tw42tOhW-CfsoQe19BaxnQ2PtRk8YKy_jFl8_GxDCC4WVilewygDETJqdi44FaLsZNNVsdvPt8zG4Yny_7K910LDhyphenhypheng7iINw6Hw6TI6Xn_a_MFK_zhVi0bBeUAlrLrg/s1600/8570937050_2ffbd491c5_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6nTBifbxf7UGi6tw42tOhW-CfsoQe19BaxnQ2PtRk8YKy_jFl8_GxDCC4WVilewygDETJqdi44FaLsZNNVsdvPt8zG4Yny_7K910LDhyphenhypheng7iINw6Hw6TI6Xn_a_MFK_zhVi0bBeUAlrLrg/s1600/8570937050_2ffbd491c5_c.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
At home we use these bins for all kinds of things. We have one in the refrigerator to hold the items that don't sit on the shelf so well. Right now it is wrangling the yogurt and oranges.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIRE1CuM8Ki7okaZeKYFWsCIrLGb73xUacgv75_cXz8rpx5kIyHUaxIOTKK42HU5s_abkQlc2uIrZoE_2m4NUh0wzQs4DmvisI6JZIyEOFvDh4M-ZC8HOcUm9JnIZOtqJQx53TRc9hSekO/s1600/8570954230_72a497fd98.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIRE1CuM8Ki7okaZeKYFWsCIrLGb73xUacgv75_cXz8rpx5kIyHUaxIOTKK42HU5s_abkQlc2uIrZoE_2m4NUh0wzQs4DmvisI6JZIyEOFvDh4M-ZC8HOcUm9JnIZOtqJQx53TRc9hSekO/s1600/8570954230_72a497fd98.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
We also have some in a closet keeping the cleaning rags nice and tidy. Several can be found in the girl's room holding building toys, doll clothes and craft supplies. We even have one that keeps the cat stuff together. I love that they are inexpensive and a good size for many uses.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The classroom bin labels are available free in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/A-House-Called-Home" target="_blank">TpT store</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
These containers are my favorite, hands down. What kind of must-have containers do you recommend? Any that can serve many purposes and hold a variety of things? Do tell! </span>Mamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17473863023080828807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904675348204042427.post-24969488889139615592013-04-21T17:09:00.001-07:002014-08-03T20:35:44.454-07:00Making My Straight Lines Straight<span style="font-family: inherit;">A little helpful tip that I've been taking advantage of this year is using a rotary cutter to cut out classroom materials. At first it went against all the quilter in me, but then I invested in an inexpensive rotary cutter and gave it a try. Let's just say, fantastic!</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here are the tools needed:</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoQib5RCvf_e4_iBp-pCWN7_O3J_arXDO2MrE9gljrK6IrE2p2vxkOk5PvLMmA4jPfYaBFlPczD-ayR85TPaWIvS0hg_u-gmVW5T6JW02d7F8hgtvS079JF1ZNd1XnrlPtqVj15ji1mT48/s1600/8670365858_cd7940b179.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoQib5RCvf_e4_iBp-pCWN7_O3J_arXDO2MrE9gljrK6IrE2p2vxkOk5PvLMmA4jPfYaBFlPczD-ayR85TPaWIvS0hg_u-gmVW5T6JW02d7F8hgtvS079JF1ZNd1XnrlPtqVj15ji1mT48/s1600/8670365858_cd7940b179.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">A rotary cutter, cutting mat and an acrylic ruler or guide.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The sharp, clean edges it leaves are so much neater than when I was cutting things out by hand and the rotary cutter gives me so much more control than the paper cutter I have at school.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4msusqB8B8hv4eqcIO9lXNTgbcwNXGvvG2p2LR5Pic0gGHooAl2gzw8lH4Xx2rQjqKbcFneGEP3AORO1KMpDO1cUNY9T1DfHQPbvhMsvXhiKm1u0QNFO_cQ7c5ao7viFM6KetDodnuH3V/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4msusqB8B8hv4eqcIO9lXNTgbcwNXGvvG2p2LR5Pic0gGHooAl2gzw8lH4Xx2rQjqKbcFneGEP3AORO1KMpDO1cUNY9T1DfHQPbvhMsvXhiKm1u0QNFO_cQ7c5ao7viFM6KetDodnuH3V/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
No matter what angles, a rotary cutter makes great straight lines and gives you much more consistency in how close or far away you are from the lines. I always hate it when I have a crooked line. Drives me crazy!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I also love that I can cut my laminated items without the waviness I usually get. Maybe I'm just a poor scissor user. I'm sure it's user error, but this helps me tremendously.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifepwYWnpwm2cfHmKR9lFzwv4_aae1o0cCILiUlAuMnCGnR4x2deJ_wSjGyGb0dsReTJlKFzrUvOLGPz3BhhadsdQPj-tF5OjzxMEhxCmmZgYpvKvHkBalXsSpy5ygEycrxn5Kqe1U3yRJ/s1600/photo+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifepwYWnpwm2cfHmKR9lFzwv4_aae1o0cCILiUlAuMnCGnR4x2deJ_wSjGyGb0dsReTJlKFzrUvOLGPz3BhhadsdQPj-tF5OjzxMEhxCmmZgYpvKvHkBalXsSpy5ygEycrxn5Kqe1U3yRJ/s1600/photo+%25283%2529.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Rotary cutters can be found in any store with a craft section. Enjoy!</span></div>

I like scissors and glue and markers and colored pencils. It doesn't float every kid's boat, so I try to do a little of this and that to hit everyone's area. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
One of my favorite activities is mapping things. Here we've mapped an insect.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsn3XJzCB_CTLaqd0vV1jg0sSBqBZvLpE-ZlYN3UE8VYU-YnWYMqBJcaHgCagZ64Wxjmqr6G6GkdUJADFsjtAk9Ly2zD7bKluZwiv_5iKoLrmC35VOfUeUq95xEcaa8VRBXY7EyT6B8rQh/s1600/8655855713_d53abc64a2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsn3XJzCB_CTLaqd0vV1jg0sSBqBZvLpE-ZlYN3UE8VYU-YnWYMqBJcaHgCagZ64Wxjmqr6G6GkdUJADFsjtAk9Ly2zD7bKluZwiv_5iKoLrmC35VOfUeUq95xEcaa8VRBXY7EyT6B8rQh/s1600/8655855713_d53abc64a2.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
If you let your kids loose and let their imaginations run, you'll end up with all kinds of neat patterns and designs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
After learning the parts of an insect, I give them the handout. They fill in the key with the colors and/or designs they choose.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguftNQuEbZVjd8ZARVgvCEypMcHlKsnvsrzxRzE4sDGoyXthCqu09KfLlfv2t-HbGnq3i1TTiOa3TtZMMzSOHo3qsm_MQ8ZWDfTRCNFDzl__RtyEEP_PhZMqvK0oFfqR6aTb8Wj9eaj5P_/s1600/8655863473_eca11e774d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguftNQuEbZVjd8ZARVgvCEypMcHlKsnvsrzxRzE4sDGoyXthCqu09KfLlfv2t-HbGnq3i1TTiOa3TtZMMzSOHo3qsm_MQ8ZWDfTRCNFDzl__RtyEEP_PhZMqvK0oFfqR6aTb8Wj9eaj5P_/s1600/8655863473_eca11e774d.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Next, they color the insect parts to match their key.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

I love the finished product! I think it's such a neat and creative way to familiarize them with the parts of an insect. This activity works with lots of different things (parts of a flower, parts of a bird, parts of the brain, etc.).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
My students are working hard on our living systems unit. Our newest anchor chart is all about the organization of living things. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5cRf-XN3Te4rpw6_c9hqEXK7s6FHmHXKIeeHeiHNuDAd50R-BVNaq21Y6XU1GIEQuyeQf9MHvIczPXKi9q29fOHO6YirQHm2Kjq7ZD-RA2-pb2rQA7X36JeCzRo7N0-gkq5J1GgIt3gm/s1600/8643726966_ca2d3871f9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5cRf-XN3Te4rpw6_c9hqEXK7s6FHmHXKIeeHeiHNuDAd50R-BVNaq21Y6XU1GIEQuyeQf9MHvIczPXKi9q29fOHO6YirQHm2Kjq7ZD-RA2-pb2rQA7X36JeCzRo7N0-gkq5J1GgIt3gm/s1600/8643726966_ca2d3871f9.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I am a huge fan of anchor charts because it helps my students organize the content into bite sized pieces. In our living systems unit we discuss the levels of organization, plant and animal cells, classification and cell theory. I like to make an anchor chart for each of the different topics and hang them around the room as we complete them.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Even more than that, I like the students to have their own copies of each anchor chart. So while I'm building a big one, they are making a smaller version at their desks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The levels of organization student version has all the boxes, but they're all mixed up. The students first figure out which boxes go together and then color those boxes to match.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3yD_f8SRsw2JL0CKzGLIh0vxsxRuCTTmtfOMY_Ssr4L9Z3KXTqburqOCIgl0SCJ4w6EYZch2L83tWCzaHKyrm5-Qqw-4anOPTkElc9mxUCJeO8C-cslQtafoB8bAvnAn7VjoYhJB2hWIt/s1600/8643911544_013b8743f2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3yD_f8SRsw2JL0CKzGLIh0vxsxRuCTTmtfOMY_Ssr4L9Z3KXTqburqOCIgl0SCJ4w6EYZch2L83tWCzaHKyrm5-Qqw-4anOPTkElc9mxUCJeO8C-cslQtafoB8bAvnAn7VjoYhJB2hWIt/s1600/8643911544_013b8743f2.jpg" height="323" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Once colored they are cut and pasted to the empty boxes on the final page.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy0bCd9wDAWMVkRTM4Y7LrNCZER9Ek1N2IANzs8MD34CHXoYyaMlmr28XXdbmsLChbCXu43DmXDbU7UJMqlOFD-tizJFpX_vXMdZ1bd7HX-ftbZToXr7GyAZ2c-pNJZSqEAt_seeQVbgKv/s1600/8642819525_ebf64ed17a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy0bCd9wDAWMVkRTM4Y7LrNCZER9Ek1N2IANzs8MD34CHXoYyaMlmr28XXdbmsLChbCXu43DmXDbU7UJMqlOFD-tizJFpX_vXMdZ1bd7HX-ftbZToXr7GyAZ2c-pNJZSqEAt_seeQVbgKv/s1600/8642819525_ebf64ed17a.jpg" height="400" width="306" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I love that my students end a unit with a set of anchor charts all their own. By the end of the year they have a nice science collection, highlighting the content they learned in a way that's easy to reference and, hopefully, easy to remember!</span><br />

While learning about the characteristics of living things, each student creates a creature all their own. The only requirement is it has to fit into the six characteristics we discuss in class. </span><br />
<center>
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Living-Invention-Six-Characteristics-of-Living-Things" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img alt=" photo LivingInventionCover_zps07a691de.png" border="0" src="http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a505/Jennifer_Sulfridge/LivingInventionCover_zps07a691de.png" width="250" /></span></a></center>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
The characteristics are:</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your creation must be made of cells</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your creation must obtain and use energy</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your creation must grow and develop</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your creation must reproduce</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your creation must respond to its surroundings</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your creation must adapt to its surroundings</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here is my example. It's a mushroom bug. It never brushes its teeth and likes to sleep under the tops of mushrooms. He fits all six characteristics, as explained in the boxes that surround him. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvmuG8Iqg22F-SlSXja-ueuxXytI0q2-L1FU36pbaLAsUjDY093zSbUTkTOTHI8Cc9o8KLII_i3eajreIgtBxg2VCoPi0JJlxOL_3Yed7FwG0UtUpmZuDKFchD-P4nBPEtkCO_oWs5GqzQ/s1600/8641442218_dc60ff5581.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvmuG8Iqg22F-SlSXja-ueuxXytI0q2-L1FU36pbaLAsUjDY093zSbUTkTOTHI8Cc9o8KLII_i3eajreIgtBxg2VCoPi0JJlxOL_3Yed7FwG0UtUpmZuDKFchD-P4nBPEtkCO_oWs5GqzQ/s1600/8641442218_dc60ff5581.jpg" height="271" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
My students have come up with some very creative examples over the years. Many like to take already existing animals and combine them. They end up with things like raccoon sharks and panda geese. Very interesting stuff.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
This is also an activity that my students enjoy presenting to the class. I try each marking period to get each student up front explaining their work. It helps to concrete those things they need to remember and I think it's good for students to be on the other side of the desk every now and again!</span><br />

I created an anchor chart and a student activity for the occasion. The student activity is free and can be found <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Lets-Build-A-Plant-Cell" target="_blank">here</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLE1Vv0BQhegGByNAy5xUHemPVq3FVbkQKOCyUIn1ayBpv2ow60iMJXY0Hw8JF_9X6TRju59RBApXdeP-VEQBvJStrvZgRAhXaZTddln-720aQ2BN-gPZV0dA4uEg2C6xwIMao3DoCDo0Z/s1600/Plant+Cell.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLE1Vv0BQhegGByNAy5xUHemPVq3FVbkQKOCyUIn1ayBpv2ow60iMJXY0Hw8JF_9X6TRju59RBApXdeP-VEQBvJStrvZgRAhXaZTddln-720aQ2BN-gPZV0dA4uEg2C6xwIMao3DoCDo0Z/s1600/Plant+Cell.png" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<center>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></center>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">First off, I printed out the colored version of the anchor chart parts. I laminated them so I wouldn't have to recreate the wheel, so to speak, when I teach the same unit next year. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
You could also print out the black and white version and either color them yourself, or what I like to do, is break my class into groups and assign each group an organelle. They color the organelle, name tag and function tag all the same color.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I use laminated poster boards for my anchor charts. I have several of them. They allow me to add the pieces and then pull them back off when I'm finished with the unit to use another day or another year. I don't have the cool sticky paper for my anchor charts, but that would work too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
I like to involve my students in putting the chart together. I give students the pieces and they listen for me to call for their piece. When it's their turn, they come up and add it to the chart.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
In the end, we end up with a completed plant cell that tells the name and function of the ten organelles we are learning about.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhknHCxY4KuH4qPU1NWr_YTZxVkv3cvvVrLZ2RDt3xL3OMEFW-iy7HnCcajbYj5fUaQtInn_rI3LYbdprdBn1Ar1OoWG6fSiD7Z7ixnlIhrN_H15Nm7v1V746Gvop8FW9_DGPvRgDrSRolk/s1600/8639004278_e55c098e93.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhknHCxY4KuH4qPU1NWr_YTZxVkv3cvvVrLZ2RDt3xL3OMEFW-iy7HnCcajbYj5fUaQtInn_rI3LYbdprdBn1Ar1OoWG6fSiD7Z7ixnlIhrN_H15Nm7v1V746Gvop8FW9_DGPvRgDrSRolk/s1600/8639004278_e55c098e93.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
After I build the chart up front (or sometimes while I am building), my students build one of their own. They color the picture, name tag and function tag all the same color. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQOzYlqKjGS3nDpNlDbM9xBDn0e4eECq-PPSQJBtYs4L13GzDPxRB5WXW7zMSEa-tyJtza3SnFi4xiBFV6L1wzPyi9zzfSvJj_uv9J4CsPjZKnsjjhLUjZU53vWY-whsLnPF-icuG1QBt_/s1600/8607448217_99f0b563c3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQOzYlqKjGS3nDpNlDbM9xBDn0e4eECq-PPSQJBtYs4L13GzDPxRB5WXW7zMSEa-tyJtza3SnFi4xiBFV6L1wzPyi9zzfSvJj_uv9J4CsPjZKnsjjhLUjZU53vWY-whsLnPF-icuG1QBt_/s1600/8607448217_99f0b563c3.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
For the little pieces or the pieces with crazy edges, I have them color around the organelles with the color of the cytoplasm. That way they can cut out a block rather than tiny or crazy pieces.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNstlts5ADfuQUwSLn1nRBZVnNDSGXOxsMQallW0ghrZ6okfnppyC5sxh0Tcf696e8jA3WHEuINLfk7NklRlS-DITZhoZPAMg5GKJEmLWzhzgTEebzSPLPGpcglubZQGxTxlg8q2hTzYWr/s1600/8607444177_62b61756ff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNstlts5ADfuQUwSLn1nRBZVnNDSGXOxsMQallW0ghrZ6okfnppyC5sxh0Tcf696e8jA3WHEuINLfk7NklRlS-DITZhoZPAMg5GKJEmLWzhzgTEebzSPLPGpcglubZQGxTxlg8q2hTzYWr/s1600/8607444177_62b61756ff.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Theirs looks just like mine, only smaller. They end up with a copy of the anchor chart that they can use for reference or to review before a test. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkZ5vm5qMySuY8wuNA4dFjgVFrQbieTGuDD5xxli-6FfKY0OsMsZ0tgcgJx1Azjb_6tFpLLs4_Fr6fKCBK3l5IflfQM4Lo0K_LE4RJbj_604ZvqJlaT0f7LzV1ZZfL7HgCHVORby315pyx/s1600/8637950925_a675ecb45e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkZ5vm5qMySuY8wuNA4dFjgVFrQbieTGuDD5xxli-6FfKY0OsMsZ0tgcgJx1Azjb_6tFpLLs4_Fr6fKCBK3l5IflfQM4Lo0K_LE4RJbj_604ZvqJlaT0f7LzV1ZZfL7HgCHVORby315pyx/s1600/8637950925_a675ecb45e.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
It's also great for teachers who help their students build yearly portfolios. It's neat to be able to look back on all the concepts they've tackled in a nice, neat notebook.</span><br />
